The San Francisco Bay Area, more commonly referred to by the locals as the greater Bay area, is a culturally diverse metropolitan region that is home to over 7 million people in cities that include San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose.
Founded early on by the various Spanish missions, the area changed with the discovery of Gold in the 1840’s. The fabled Gold Rush brought prospectors from around the world to try their luck. Most failed, but a few did strike it rich.
Known today for world class universities such as UC Berkeley (or Cal) and Stanford, the growth of Silicon Valley brought the brightest and most ambitious people from around the world to settle here. Real estate continues to climb upward to staggering heights, with some homes starting in the tens of millions of dollars.
The Bay Area is known now for its liberal California lifestyle and politics, the high-tech industry, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Other features include Alcatraz Island, the Winchester Mystery House, Muir Woods and of course the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Truly something for everyone.
The climate is mild year round, and tourists consider the Bay area one of the best places to vacation in the entire world. Every major cuisine is found here, with offerings from street vendors up to world class restaurants. Shops carry a variety of goods from around the world, from bargain basement t-shirts to fabled Tiffany jewels.
The Bay area is certainly worthy of at least one visit, and many people routinely come back year after year. And the fact that the Bay Area continues to grow in population when many other California areas are losing residents speaks to the loyalty of those lucky enough to live here.
