Useful Information for Fremont CA

Named after one of the most famous true pioneers, Fremont CA was incorporated in the year 1956. John Charles Fremont literally put the city on the map, and was known as the Great Pathfinder for his numerous explorations in California.

The first Europeans to inhabit the area were the Spaniards who established one of the early California Missions in San Jose in1797. Between the Mission and John Fremont, trails were established that led the earliest settlers in.

Most of the area was sparsely populated until the California gold rush of 1850 that led miners to seek their fortune. Businesses grew up rapidly to provide them with equipment, tents, shovels, food and everything else they required. Saloons and boarding houses were also built, as well as churches and the first post office. The mercantile stores made more money than most of the miners.

The warm Mediterranean like climate was also perfect for farming, and the arrival of the railroad thru the Niles Canyon area gave the farmers a perfect way to ship out their crops to the rest of the country. The Niles area was also home to the growing film industry, and a museum devoted to this industry still exists in the Fremont of today.

Fremont is now the 4th most populous center for the San Francisco Bay area, and the largest city close to Silicon Valley. It has become a true melting pot of diversity, as shown by the many sister cities Fremont has in Australia, the Azores, India, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines and Portugal.
